How It All Started

The Nigeria Entertainment Award (NEA Awards) was established in New York City in January of 2006. NEA Awards is an annual event focused on recognizing the many contributions of African Entertainers to a thriving entertainment industry. The producers of the event are dedicated to promoting the image and rich culture of Nigeria in the continent and around the globe. This dedication has increased the awareness of a new edgy style of African Entertainment that has helped promote Nigerian acts to the world. 

 

In 2006, the Founders of the organization came together to develop an event that will serve the 

growing African population in North America. Since its inception, NEA has not only become the premier event in America but it has also become the most recognizable international Award show. Besides its popularity, NEA Awards is now considered a prestigious Award that African entertainers seek to add to their list of Award recognition.

 

The annual NEA Awards has been attended by the biggest names in African entertainment with the likes of Ramsey Nouah, Tuface Idibia, Funke Akindele, MI, Super Model Oluchi, Former Miss World Agbani Darego, Kenny Ogungbe, D1, Juliet Ibrahim and Mr. Olu Jacobs amongst others. 

The first edition was held at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland at College Park on July 28th, 2006 and was hosted by comedian Michael Blackson. The event featured performances by Sauce Kid, Sammy Okposo and legendary singer Mike Okri. Tuface Idibia and Banky W were amongst the winners of the first edition.

 

The second edition was held at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts in New York City in June of 2007 and was hosted by Comedian Julius Agwu. The 2007 edition featured performances by Banky W and Mike Aremu.  

 

The third edition was also held at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts in New York City in June of 2008 and was hosted by Actor Raz Adoti (Amistad) and Tatiana from the 2007 edition of Big Brother Africa. The 2007 edition featured performances by Dekunle Fuji and Tosin Martin. The event also featured Ramsey Noah and Supermodel Oluchi’s presentation of the Best Actor Award to legendary Actor, Olu Jacobs.

 

In 2009, the forth edition of the NEA Awards, was held at the Howards University’s Cramton Auditorium in DC. The event was hosted by comedian Basorge and cohosted by actresses Omoni Oboli and Ebbe Bassey. The event also featured performances by YQ, Midnight Crew, Toba Gold, Bigiano and J Martins. The 2010 edition was held at the third edition was also held on September 18th, 2011 at the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center in New York and was hosted by Singer Omawumi. The event featured performances by Jesse Jagz, Omawumi, MI and Tuface Idibia; Jesse Jagz, Omawumi, MI and Tuface Idibia also all received award at this ceremony.

 

2011 edition was held on September 2nd, 2011 at the Symphony Space Sharp Theater in New York and was hosted by Comedian Julius Agwu and Actress Funke Akindele (aka “Jenifa”). The event featured performances by Jesse Jagz, Ice Prince, Waje, Sound Sultan, Sam Klef and MI. Ice Prince, Waje, Sam Klef and MI all took home award at this ceremony.

 

The most recent edition was held on September 2nd, 2012 at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts in New York City and was hosted by Comedian AY and Actress Funke Akindele (aka “Jenifa”). The event featured performances by Wiz Kid, Ice Prince, Banky W, Waje, Brymo, Vector and Seyi Shay. Wiz Kid, Davido, Don Jazzy, Vector were amongst some of those who took home an award at this 

ceremony.
